Structure and Operation of the EU

Semester 3
Structure and Operation of the EU

The course on the Structure and Operation of the European Union will provide a basic analysis of the institutional framework and operation of the European Union. The topics examined during the course entail the aims and competences of the EU, its nature as a legal entity, a detailed analysis of the main EU Institutions, the schemes of EU Administration and the basic institutional aspects of the EU Finances (ie the EU budget and its enactment, the implementation of the budget, the protection of the EU’s financial interests etc). In addition to the lectures undertaken by the Chair holder, there will be guest lectures by experts on issues relating to the EU, as well as officials for the EU Institutions. Teaching will be supplemented by active participation of the students in the form of undertaking research and submitting essays which, after correction by the Chair holder, will be presented by their authors to their fellow students, and then there will be discussion on the respective topics (discussion groups).
